    • 1). Acquire the owner's manual to the 1987 Chevy Caprice. These are available for sale or free download on a number of websites. The owner's manual is essentially your in-depth guide to every component of the Caprice and will illustrate each part and how to disassemble and reassemble it.

    • 2). Strip the interior of the Caprice. Take out the seats, dashboard, steering wheel and carpet. Look for any rust or chipped paint on the inside and of the car and sand it with fine grit sandpaper. The 1987 Caprice has fabric seats, so search for any damage, such as torn fabric or major stains. Inspect the other removable parts of the interior for damaged or missing parts. Purchase all of these from a garage or online parts dealers.

    • 3). Strip the exterior of the Caprice and inspect it for rust and damaged or missing pieces. Clean any rust off with sandpaper and replace all missing or broken parts with newly acquired parts from a garage or online parts dealer.

    • 4). Remove the engine using an engine hoist. Inspect it for missing and broken parts, and purchase all of the necessary replacements. Clean off debris using a toothbrush. Cover all electrical parts, the air intake and the carburetor with plastic bags and secure them tightly with rubber bands. Then, wash the engine with soapy water and wash it down with a garden hose. Make sure no water enters the vulnerable parts if the engine, as it can result in serious damage. Place the engine back into the frame of the Caprice and rewire the car. You will need to use the engine hoist to replace it.

    • 5). Paint the exterior parts of the Caprice in its original color. You can acquire the paint from a garage or online. If, however, you do not have any previous experience repainting cars, you may wish to have it done professionally to ensure the best result.

    • 6). Reassemble the Caprice. Consult the owner's manual for specifics. You may find it harder to reassemble the car than to take it apart. Take your time and read the instructions carefully.
