How to Obtain Proof of Citizenship
- 1). Contact the United States hospital you were born in. Follow their procedure for obtaining a certified birth certificate with a raised seal. Follow the instructions and obtain your American birth certificate as proof of your American citizenship.
- 2). Visit the Department of State's website to apply for a passport. Fill out the electronic application form answering all questions including name, place of birth and current address. Print out the finished form and pay the fee online with a credit card.
- 3). Go to a local photo shop and have two passport photos taken. Enclose your birth certificate into the application envelope and mail it to the proper location. Wait a few weeks to receive your passport in the mail as proof of citizenship.
- 4). Obtain permanent residency status as a foreign national, informally known as obtaining a green card. Live in the United States for the appropriate amount of time, generally for five years. Apply for naturalization with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, pass a verbal citizenship test and take an oath in front of a judge to receive a citizenship certificate.
- 5). Obtain your foreign born birth certificate listing your American parent(s). Gather documents that prove that your American parent has a genetic link to you, was an American citizen at the time of your birth and had a residence inside the United States for fiver years prior to your birth. Fill out form N-600 with USCIS, enclose the appropriate documents, pay any applicable fees with a U.S. Postal money order, mail the application to the appropriate lock-box facility and wait for your citizenship certificate in the mail.
