Utility Debt Recovery
- Some utility companies may offer a courtesy call or letter as a reminder, or to see why you are late on your payment. During this step of the collection process the company may also offer payment arrangements to the customer to help them through hard times.
- If a payment or payment arrangements have not been made, the next step for the utility company is to have the service shut off. If this happens, the utility company may then add additional collection and reconnection fees when the past-due balance is paid and service has been restored.
- If the customer moves out of a residence and no longer needs the service, it may be difficult to collect the past-due amount. In cases such as these, the utility companies will attempt to call and collect on the over-due account. If unsuccessful, they will send the account to a collections company.
