Motability Information
- Created in 1977, Motability administered the government's Mobility Allowance, which was implemented in 1976 and gave disabled people a cash allowance to obtain vehicles to improve their mobility. In 1978, the Motability Scheme was introduced and allowed the disabled to exchange their allowance for a mobility device.
- Disabled persons who receive benefits and have at least 12 months of award length remaining on either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement are eligible to apply for the Motability Scheme. Disabled persons who do not drive, such as children, can also qualify for Motability Scheme funding.
- Motability has several responsibilities, including overseeing the Motability Scheme, providing technical support, raising funds and providing financial help to disabled persons who cannot afford mobility vehicles. In addition, Motability provides financial assistance through the administration of the government's Specialised Vehicles Fund, which helps persons who need to use a wheelchair for their mobility needs.
