From A Distance
The famous song by one of the world's most respected artists, Bette Midler, would resonate in my living room for hours.
After ten long years, this hit has once again surfaced to join my "favorite" list and it has stayed for long since it did.
Looking forward, this long overdue trip to the US is more accentuated by the thought and the lyrics of this classic.
I used to love this song when I was in elementary and as the final date of my departure continues to draw closer, I am beginning to sense this distance.
About two decades ago, things were entirely different.
The internet has not made a lot of presence in many areas, especially those belonging to the Third World circle.
When people want to study about just anything, they will have to pore on a truck load of books in order to get the freshest and the most relevant information.
If a family member wants to send another one a very important message, he will have to send it through what was available during that time: courier or telephone.
There are stark differences comparing today and yesterday, and by saying that, I mean really huge differences.
There were no social networks by then, largely because Mark Zuckerberg was not born yet.
Now that he has invented the world's largest social networking site, Facebook, things have changed enormously.
What used to take days just to get a message across the other side, today, just a few click does it and voila, someone across the globe already knows what goes on halfway across the planet.
Its like, fiber optic technology has caused a great interconnection of some sort, and for almost all things.
The physical distance that exists between people no longer affects most people.
For people who have started to take migration path, such as myself, the distance is no longer too much of a concern, compared to before.
There is a more stable guarantee that relationships will continue to grow and flourish.
Calls today are much more affordable.
Some internet site even offer these call for free, and as clear as if you paid for the service.
To top that, there are certain sites even that offer both voice and video call together for free, wherein one sees in real time the actual face of the one you are talking to, half way across the globe.
From a distance, truly, the world is a small speck of sand compared to the vastness of the universe.
From a distance, the world knows no borders, thus, no walls that separate people from each other.
From a distance, the world is just a ball of life, where the bustle and the hustle depend on the single steps of every individual who tries to make a difference, as long as he lives.
