If you're a resident or visitor to Sanibel Island, take advantage of a unique opportunity to learn about marine ecosystems and conservation through vibrant experiences at the Sanibel Sea School. The Sanibel Sea School provides programs and services that include experiential learning as well as research and communication.

The Sanibel Sea School offers both children and adults incredible learning opportunities. The School utilizes the barrier island habitats of Captiva and Sanibel Island to help students learn in the natural environment. Learning programs involve hands-on interaction and experiences that accomplish a variety of goals.

Students of the Sanibel Sea School develop a keen awareness of marine ecosystems including plants, animals, people, the ocean, land and weather. Students learn about the global as well as the local environment. The Sea School provides "transformative education," meaning it not only consists of a learning experience, but changes the way students live.

The Sea School at Sanibel Island is currently developing its adult education program for the 2010 - 2011 season. Children's courses include coverage of a variety of topics; during the summer of 2010, Manatee Week, Dolphin Week, and Coral Reef Week were some of the frameworks used to create learning adventures for students.

Typically, the Sanibel Sea School enrolls 24 student children per day, although more may be accommodated during busy times such as summer and Christmas vacations. Students are divided into groups of ten, and each group has a lead educator as a supervisor. Volunteers and interns assist in the classroom and in the field.

There are two sessions each day at the Sea School on Sanibel Island, including a morning unit from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, plus an afternoon session from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and a lunch break in between. Class group attendance as well as enrollment for homeschoolers and individuals is available.

Students aged 6 to 13 are welcome to participate in our children's program, while older teens may consider the adult program for education.

You don't have to be a resident to enroll in Sanibel Sea School educational programs. Visitors and vacationers are welcome. Enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis, so if you know you want to attend on particular dates, advanced booking is recommended. A deposit is required at the time of booking, but it's refundable if you need to cancel as long as your provide at least 24 hours advance notice of your cancellation.
