Build a Big Model Railroad Layout Or a Small Train Layout?

56
When building a model train layout you do not need to start off with a big train setup.
As long as you have the space you can expand your layout as needed.
Take your time and add your own personal touches along the way.
Building a small model train layout to start with will give you a chance to discover your strengths and weaknesses.
You will learn what you can do with ease and what tasks are more of a challenge.
Some beginner model railroaders get put off by attempting difficult projects too early and become overwhelmed by a vast array of details, choices and problems.
It is much better to start with something you know you CAN do to get immediate results and instant gratification.
Most of the huge basement layouts started out as a simple 4 x 8 foot layout and were expanded over the years.
You can develop your skills and your model train layout from there by adding new scenery features, extra rolling stock, new accessories, maybe some additional track and another locomotive.
Always remember; building your model train layout is not a race.
It is better to get it right than finish it to a poor quality in record time.
When you are starting out, do not get fooled into buying train sets from department store Christmas sales.
These are usually mass produced low quality sets and can be more trouble than they are worth.
Buildings can make even the smallest model train layout seem much larger.
Even in a town scene buildings should have some space between them.
Giving buildings breathing room makes the model train layout appear to be more realistic and it requires less effort.
Buildings can say as much about the scene you are modeling as the trains.
So, it is important to select buildings that match the era and geography of the theme.
Non-modelers often pick up the clues given by buildings and structures, even though they know nothing about the railroad elements.
So do not get caught out!
