Silverfish Habitat
- Silverfish are insects from the family Thysanura. They are typically silver or brown in color and do not have wings. These insects are flat, oval-shaped and can generally grow to be 3/4 of an inch long. Silverfish have chewing mouth parts, antennae and three tails at the end of the abdomen. Small scales blanket their bodies
The close cousin of the silverfish is the firebrat. The two insects are mostly indistinguishable, except that the firebrat is a darker brown color. - The Silverfish lives in mostly low places within the home, although they have been known to live in attics. These insects are comfortable in temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees F with a relative humidity of 75 to 95 percent. They become active at night. Houses in drier climates tend to attract them more, as they head indoors for humidity.
- Silverfish and firebrats are medically harmless insects. They may, however, cause damage to clothes, book bindings, food and paper goods.
