Drywalling a Bathroom

    • 1). Determine the number of drywall sheets you'll need by multiplying width and height of each wall for total area of coverage desired on each wall. Allow for some waste of drywall boards to reduce excessive number of seams. Drywall comes in 4-by-8-foot sheets, which can be mounted on walls horizontally or vertically. For example, if your wall measures 15 feet in length by 7 feet in height and you mount drywall vertically, you'll need approximately 3.75 sheets of drywall to cover the wall, cutting 1 foot of drywall off each sheet.

    • 2). Cut drywall to desirable size with a straight-edged ruler or T-square and a utility knife blade. Cut the backside of the drywall. Pull or snap edges of the drywall toward you to break along the cut.

    • 3). Mount the drywall to studs using drywall nails. You may also use drywall screws if you desire. Sink the nail or screw head slightly beneath the surface of the drywall board for a more finished look when you're finished. Mount drywall throughout bathroom, cutting drywall as needed for a snug fit to corners or cabinets

    • 4). Apply drywall tape to the seams in the drywall. You can use solid paper tape or mesh. Situate drywall tape or mesh evenly so seams line up with the middle of the tape. Apply another layer of tape or mesh if gaps are wider than 1/4 inch, overlapping the tape so it doesn't appear bulky.

    • 5). Apply joint compound to the seams, over the tape or mesh. Use a wide blade putty knife for this step. A 5-inch putty knife works well. Fill in all gaps, nail dents or dings in the drywall and allow drying for 24 hours.

    • 6). Sand the dried joint compound over seams for a smooth surface. Feel with your fingers over the seam to offer a flat surface.

    • 7). Paint the drywall with primer and latex paint.
