Multiple Benefits of Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures women and men ask for at my Indiana plastic surgery practice. Most of them want to get rid of a bulge here, a roll there, or reduce the overall size of a specific area. What people don't always realize is that liposuction can provide a variety of other benefits, improving their appearance as well as their self-esteem.
Procedure Overview
Although it can be enhanced by a variety of modern technologies from lasers to ultrasound, liposuction is essentially a surgical procedure that dislodges unwanted excess fat and removes the fat from the body through a hollow metal tube (called a cannula). At my practice in Indiana, I perform liposuction as an outpatient procedure while the patient is under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.
Psychological Benefits
Plastic surgery should never be considered merely as a means of improving confidence. True confidence comes from within, and should be determined by more than outward appearance. However, we all know that feeling unhappy with the way that you look can take a toll on your mental health. Finally achieving the slim contours that cannot be achieved through diet and exercise can help many men and women feel free from self-loathing and frustration, emotions that can hamper their professional and personal lives.
Enhancing other Procedures
While liposuction is very popular as a stand-alone procedure, we commonly use it to fine-tune other plastic surgery procedures. During a facelift, liposuction can be used to gently and precisely define the jaw line, sculpt the neck, and contour the area under the chin. Liposuction of the flanks can supplement an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, and can enhance and better define the waistline. It is also sometimes combined with other techniques during breast reduction surgery for men and women.
Encouraging a Healthy Lifestyle
While liposuction should not be used as a weight loss method, I have seen it help men and women lose weight indirectly through positive reinforcement. For people who struggle to pursue a healthy lifestyle, liposuction may provide the motivation they need to begin or continue healthy habits. Often, liposuction patients lose weight and improve their exercise routine after body contouring because they feel better about themselves and are finally free from their "trouble spots." They're not embarrassed to slip into tight-fitting exercise garb or to have others watch them at the gym.
