How to Order Your Perfect Wedding Cake
- 1). Select your cake decorator. Interview several decorators in your area to ensure they are available for your wedding date and compare pricing. Make sure that your wedding venue allows you the use of outside vendors. Use the vendor list provided by your venue in the event you are not allowed to use an outside cake designer. Use a professional cake decorator versus having a friend or family member make the cake to ensure it is designed the way you want.
- 2). Arrange a tasting. Select three or four cake flavors from the cake decorator you are interested in using and taste cakes that you wish to use for your wedding cake. Ensure that you understand what ingredients are in each cake to avoid any allergic reactions.
- 3). Know your budget. Understand cakes cost anywhere from $500 to over $1,000. Ensure you have created a wedding cake budget and let your cake decorator know the budget you are working with.
- 4). Know your venue. Tell your cake decorator if your cake will be outdoors or indoors to ensure that proper measures are taken to protect the cake against the elements.
- 5). Look through bridal magazines, cake portfolios and wedding planning sites to find examples of cakes similar to what you are looking for. Bring those examples to your wedding cake consult for your cake decorator to integrate into your overall design.
- 6). Get swatches of colors from your wedding. Ensure you include swatches from your main colors and accent colors so that your cake decorator can match colors to the rest of your wedding decor.
- 7). Know your guest count. Tell your cake decorator how many cake servings or guests you will be serving with your cake. Order sheet cakes or cupcakes to supplement servings if your wedding cake design is not big enough to feed the entire guest list.
- 8). Give yourself enough time to order a wedding cake and get the cake designer you want. Order a wedding cake three to six months in advance to ensure the cake decorator you want is available.
- 9). Place your deposit with your wedding cake designer. Read over any wedding cake contracts and understand sections regarding delivery fees, refunds or satisfaction guarantees. Get copies of contracts you sign as well as a copy of the invoice stating your entire order. Request copies of sketches of designs used to create your cake.
