Amarinder's stake for Congress CM gets boost from Ambika Soni at rally

CHANDIGARH:With Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ambika Soni on Tuesday referring to Captain Amarinder Singh, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president as future Chief during a rally held at Kharar (Mohali) has come as a great boost to Amarinder in terms of being a front-runner for the post of CM in the event of Congress returning to power.
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President,Captain Amarinder Singh is a major crowd-puller and star campaigner for Congress in the ensuing assembly elections to be held on January 30. The party is banking heavily on Amarinder to wrest the power from Akalis in Punjab. They said that at the national level, Congress' decision to declare Manmohan Singh as Prime Ministerial candidate in 2009 general elections had helped the party in picking up 50 seats more as compared to 2004.
Though, Ambika stated that the policy of Congress is not to declare the CM candidate before the elections in the concerned state, however, she said that Amarinder was orchestrating the party's campaign vigorously in the state makes him as main contender for the post of Chief Minister if Congress wins the assembly elections.The party is banking heavily on Amarinder to wrest the power from Akalis in Punjab.
However, the reluctance of Congress high command not to project Captain Amarinder Singh officially as its chief ministerial candidate in the Punjab assembly polls has surprised political observers.The political observers feel that Captain Amarinder Singh has a mass-base and charisma to challenge the Akalis. They said that even Congress high command is also aware of this fact but its reluctance to announce Amarinder as chief minister nominee is hard to explain.
They said that at the national level, Congress' decision to declare Manmohan Singh as Prime Ministerial candidate in 2009 general elections had helped the party in picking up 50 seats more as compared to 2004.
Due to non-projection of chief ministerial candidate, a section of party has been raising the speculation that interestingly Preneet Kaur, Minister of State for External Affairs, wife of Capt Amarinder Singh could also be a considered for the post of CM in case Congress wins the assembly election.
The political observers said that non-projection of CM candidate tends to create undue confusion and ambiguity not only within the rank and file of party but also among the voters in the state.
