How to Fix Sewer Pipes
- 1). Measure 3 inches on each side of the broken pipe area. Mark the sewer pipe at both of these locations. Make a perpendicular straight cut through the pipe at both marks, using a hacksaw (the cuts will be parallel with each other). Remove all plastic burrs from the existing pipe ends using a workman's knife.
- 2). Measure between the existing pipe cuts. Cut a new section of pipe to the same length. Remove any burrs.
- 3). Brush PVC primer to the outside ends of the existing pipes and the ends of the new section of pipe. Then prime the inside of two straight, 180-degree, PVC couplings.
- 4). Brush PVC cement to the existing pipe ends, and one inside end of both straight couplings. Push the couplings onto the existing pipe ends and hold them in place while the cement dries, roughly five seconds.
- 5). Brush cement into the remaining inside ends of the couplings and the outside ends of the new section of pipe. Squeeze the pipe into the ends of the couplings, and hold in place while the cement dries.
