North Carolina I9 Form Requirements
- The I-9 form, titled Employment Eligibility Verification, is a required form for all new employees in North Carolina. The form was created by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. The form is intended to verify that a person is eligible to work in the U.S. By law, work eligibility must be determined before an employer can hire someone.
- All new employees in North Carolina must fill out the I-9 form. Even U.S. citizens are required to prove their eligibility for employment. Employees must complete the I-9 before the end of the day on the first day of employment.
- The employee only needs to fill out Section 1 of the I-9 form. Enter your full name and street address. You are not allowed to enter a P.O. Box number. If you have a maiden name, enter it on the form. Write your date of birth and social security number. Check the box that represents your current legal status in the U.S. When finished, sign and date the form. The employer is responsible for filling out Section 2.
- In addition to completing the I-9 form, you must present valid identification to your employer. There are various acceptable forms of identification. For instance, you can present your current U.S. passport to verify identity and employment eligibility. Alternatively, you can present a driver's license or state-issued ID card and prove employment eligibility with a social security card. The list of acceptable forms of ID are listed on the form. You must always present the original document of your identification, unless you are presenting a certified copy of a birth certificate. The employer is able to make photocopies of the documents to keep proof of your eligibility on file.
- It's very important that you comply with the requirements of the I-9 form. If an employee does not fill out the form and provide valid identification within three business days of employment, he or she can be terminated.
