Definition: Hypoxemia
Hypoxemia is defined as an inadequate level of oxygen in the blood.
Hypoxemia can occur when the lungs are not functioning properly or when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the lungs for oxygenation. Hypoxemia can lead to hypoxia, a deficiency in the amount of oxygen delivered to the organs and tissues of the body.
Symptoms of hypoxia can include shortness of breath, elevated blood pressure, a rapid heart rate, lightheadedness or stupor and cyanosis, a bluish color to the skin.
