How to Cover the Wood on a Shotgun for Hunting

19
    • 1). Cover the surface on the shotgun with masking tape. You may wish to put a tiny amount of baking flour beneath the tape to make it easier to remove when you are finished, but this is not entirely necessary. Make sure to cover every bit of the firearm with tape, taking special care to tape over the muzzle, the brake (hinge) and other moving parts.

    • 2). Cut a hole at the end of a stocking, using the scissors, and push the muzzle of the gun through this hole. Pull the rest of the stocking over the gun as far as it will go without stretching the sock. Feel free to use more socks and cut more holes into the sock(s) as necessary to cover as much of the gun as you like.

    • 3). Hang the gun outdoors, using the wire coat hanger, by looping its hook through the trigger guard or scope mount. You need to hang the gun at least high enough to completely suspend the firearm off of the gun, and it is best if you can hang it high enough that you will not have to bend over to work on it.

    • 4). Using the spray paint and leaves, twigs and/or shrubbery of your preference, paint the stocking by continuously using the leaves, twigs and/or shrubbery as stencils. Use brief, passing sprays on the gun to to avoid overcoating the stocking and creating drips. It is best to stick to just one or two kinds of related plants, such as oak leaves and twigs or catttails and stems. Additionally, it is best to use colors of paint that best fit the stencils you are using, such as the seasonal colors of oak tree leaves for oak leaves or the seasonal colors of cattails for cattails and stems. Try to paint every bit of stocking; do not leave anything looking white.

    • 5). Allow the paint to completely dry before removing the stocking(s) and tape from the gun. To cover the gun for hunting, be sure to reapply the camouflaged stockings to the gun as they were when you painted them. Use the scissors to cut holes into the stocking where you need access to the gun, such as the breech, safety or bolt, if you haven't already created access to these areas.
