How to Set Up Home Theater Speakers for Video
- 1). Place the front speakers on either side of the movie screen or TV in your home theater. Keep the left speaker on the left side of the screen and the right speaker on the right side of the screen. Don't situate the speakers directly beside the screen, but spaced away from the screen so they are at the far edges of the seating area. If you have a sofa as the main seating, for instance, the speakers should be roughly even with either end of the sofa. The THX Surround Sound Setup Guide recommends angling the speakers 45 degrees inward toward the center of the seating arrangement.
- 2). Set or mount the center speaker of the surround sound system either directly below the center of the screen or directly above the center of the screen. If set below the screen, angle the speaker upward toward head level for the viewers. If above the screen, angle the speaker downward toward head level. Use the manufacturer's instructions if mounting speakers.
- 3). Position the left and right surround speakers directly across from the main seating in the home theater along the side walls. If you are using the sofa, for example, the speakers should be located even with each end of the sofa. Use the manufacturer's instructions to mount the speakers 2 to 3 feet above head level, and angle the speakers slightly downward.
- 4). Set up your back left and right surround speakers (if your surround sound system has these) directly beside each other in the center of the back wall. If the system is a TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio system, however, the back speakers should be spaced apart and angled in toward the main listening position in the theater.
- 5). Place the subwoofer of your surround sound system in the center of the front wall, beneath the screen. If you have more than one subwoofer for your surround sound system, the THX Surround Sound Setup guide suggests positioning them in this fashion: two subwoofers placed in the center of each side wall, or four subwoofers placed in the center of each wall.
