How to Summarize Short Stories
- 1). List the characters on a sheet of paper.
- 2). Describe the setting in one sentence.
- 3). Sum up the the story's main conflict in a single sentence. Break this down into the key events of the story.
- 4). Describe the story's resolution.
- 5). Write a summary containing this information. Introduce the setting, characters and conflict; follow the sequence of key events; and conclude with the resolution.
- 6). Trim the summary into a single paragraph, ideally no longer than 100-150 words.
