Low Light Tropical Houseplants

A common problem in homes is how to keep plants alive in rooms with very little light or no windows. Picking a plant that can tolerate, or even enjoy, low light can certainly improve your chances. There are even tropical houseplants that will bloom in low lit situations. Rotating your houseplants around different lighting conditions regularly can also improve their growth.

    Aspidistra Elatior

    • The Aspidistra Elatior, or the cast iron plant as it is sometimes called, commonly reaches heights of 2 feet as an indoor plant. As its nickname suggests, the Aspidistra is hard to kill and will tolerate conditions such as low light, overly wet soil, cold air or drafts, and neglect. It's shiny, dark green leaves make it an attractive houseplant. For best results give it moderate light, keep the soil evenly moist, and fertilize every three to four months.

    Begonias

    • Begonias can be grown indoors, although they are more commonly grown in gardens. Indoors they can tolerate low lighting, however they prefer a moderate amount and can be easily satisfied near a window. Begonias need careful watering, as over watering will kill your plant. They also like to be kept in small crowded pots, rather than moved into a bigger space. Misting your begonia will help it thrive, as they like high humidity.

    Epipremnum aureum

    • Epipremnum aureum, or devil's ivy, is a common indoor plant for low lit areas. It has very long stems that hang or drape and can grow to be over 8 feet long. To keep its shiny, heart-shaped leaves happy, give it as much light as possible and let the soil dry out between waterings. Use well draining potting mix as it is susceptible to root rot from sitting in wet soil too long.

    Spathiphyllum

The Spathiphyllum, or peace lily, has dark green leaves that can grow to be 1 foot tall along with elegant white lily blooms. This plant enjoys low light, and should be kept away from windows and direct sunlight. If the leaves begin turning yellow or falling off, it is a sign that your plant is getting too much light. Water your peace lily once a week, for an evenly moist soil. Getting the soil too soggy will result in root rot and kill your houseplant. One thing this plant won't tolerate is cold drafts, so keep it away from doorways.
