How to Make a Barrel Chair Out of a Log
- 1). Select a cedar log that is 18 inches in diameter. Cut off a 36-inch long section with a chain saw.
- 2). Choose a top and bottom for the barrel chair. Measure 18 inches up from the bottom and mark the measurement. Cut half of the way through the log at this measurement with a chain saw.
- 3). Draw a center line across the top of the log. Cut from the center line down to the horizontal center cut. This will create the back of the chair and the seat.
- 4). Draw a curved line across the chair back. Leave the chair back approximately 2 inches thick at the thickest point.
- 5). Tap a chisel with a mallet to remove the curved portion of the chair back. Remove small slivers at a time until the back is completely cut out to a smooth curve.
- 6). Sand the log chair with fine-grit sandpaper. Sand with the grain. Pay particular attention to the seat and back.
- 7). Apply a wood finish to the chair. Allow the finish to dry.
- 8). Drive floor protectors into the base of the chair. Space the protectors around the edge of the base every 6 inches.
