Koi fishes are attractive pets to have.
They do not only give you satisfaction in your sight but also conveys a feeling of calmness and peacefulness.
They are common pets that are not usually kept in aquarium tanks but in natural ponds often placed in the garden or any outdoor area.
The reason behind this is that caring for Koi Fish is different from those in the tank.
Later on, you will come to know why this is so.
Caring for Koi most of all needs dedication and determination.
Why? Because like any pets, they need attention to develop and grow well.
More so that their environment is not as controlled as that of an aquarium.
For this reason, before you take home a Koi, you must have already convinced and accepted that you need to give such quality time to care for your pet.
Otherwise, you will never be ready in keeping one in your home.
Koi fishes, just like any type of fish, needs special requirements.
Before you can actually enjoy their beauty and elegance, you must exert effort to learn how to take care of them the right way and familiarize the things that can only be learned by experiences.
First, you must decide of the right spot to build your pond.
Most Koi owners put their pond on their garden only.
Although an indoor one is possible, an outdoor display of Koi is more common.
Regarding the depth of the pond, there is really no standard as to how deep they should be.
But some of the requirements according to the experts is that they must be too deep for the herons to step.
Because of their attractive colors, they are often eyed by land predators such as the cat, raccoon, fox, badger and hedgehog.
In some cases, nets are provided over the ponds to avoid enemies from emptying your pond.
Trees that give shadow underneath may also help to keep the Koi fishes away from the aerial view of birds that consider them tasty too like kingfishers.
One of the basic reminders in caring for Koi is not to overcrowd them in the pond.
Every mature Koi needs 1000 gallons of water to freely swim and survive.
It is not that they cannot thrive with a narrower environment but they prove to be more active in a pond where they have more space for themselves.
Koi love various foods since they are omnivores.
In fact, they can eat lettuce, watermelons and other fruits.
Their food can come in fresh form but often in pellets and sticks.
When feeding them, be sure to give only enough to avoid left-over from sinking to the pond and thus adding dirt in the water.
They usually come to the surface during meal time.
Observe their bodies for signs of parasites and other infections.
Provide an affective filtration system to keep the water clean.
Feed them often but in smaller amounts.
Be ready for winter time and periods where the temperate can drop for Koi's appetite will usually go rancid.
Do not worry though for after the temperature goes back, they resume their activeness too.
