How to Stop Dogs From Urinating on Plants

    • 1). Place a barrier that confines the dog to one area of the yard if the dog that is urinating on your yard is your own dog. Place the dog into this confined area any time it is outside to prevent the dog from urinating where ever it pleases.

    • 2). Hose the dog with water when you see it begin to urinate in an undesirable spot. This works for both your own personal dog and any loose dog in the neighborhood. The spray of water will also help to dilute any urine that has managed to trickle onto the plant. Most dogs will run away when it experiences a burst of water in the face.

    • 3). Place plants behind a barrier or fence. Make sure the plants sit far enough back so that a dog who lifts its leg on the barrier cannot urinate onto the plant. This works well if there is sidewalk and fence where neighbor dogs often walk. The neighbor dogs will urinate on the fence while walking, but will be unable to hit the plants.

For vegetable gardens, you can fence those to keep unwanted canines back. Plant all vegetables back from the fence line to prevent unwanted urine spray from a male dog. Simple chicken wire is inexpensive and works well for a fencing material with a few fence posts.

    • 4). Plant garden vegetables and prized plants in a raised flower bed if you have a female dog. Female dogs squat to urinate and will seldom climb into a raised flower bed but will choose to simply urinate on the level ground. Container gardens also work well for this purpose.

    • 5). Teach your own dog to urinate and defecate in a specific area of the yard. Take the dog out on a leash so it does not have free reign of the yard. Once a routine is established most dogs will continue to use the same spot to go potty in. If the dog is a male dog and not neutered then consider neutering the dog to prevent territorial marking around the yard.

    • 6). Place pine cone mulch around newly-planted trees, shrubs and plants to discourage the dog from walking into the flower bed to potty. Most dogs do not like the feel of pine cones under their feet.

    • 7). Mix four jalapeno peppers in a blender with two cups of water. Take the solution and pour into a spray bottle. Spray plants that the dog enjoys urinating on. Dogs are sensitive to the smell of peppers and will avoid the area. Reapply if it rains. The solution will not harm plants.
