    Hunting Mule Deer

    • 1). Start on the eastern side of of the state, which is where almost the entire population of mule dear reside. Hunt in areas that have a lot of buck brush and if hunting in the snow, stick to southern sides of mountains, which will have less snow and therefore more deer. Try to hunt in higher areas because the deer tend to work their way down mountainsides and will be spooked by anything below them.

    • 2). Move slowly and quietly. Those big ears aren't just a decoration. Mule deer are known for their hearing and their vision. That makes it imperative for a mule deer hunter to limit movement and noises. Avoid walking through clear cut areas, and always stop when coming to large clearings.

    • 3). Know when to shoot. Mule deer have very distinct mannerisms. For example, many mule deer will slow down considerably when approaching a stream to drink water. They will be very cautious at this time. Also learn to watch their ears. The deer has not picked up your scent if it's ear are not moving. If the deer stops and starts rotating its ears, that means it has picked up your scent, but is not sure where you are. If a deer's ears point at you, that means it has located you and will run at any instant and this is your last chance to shoot.
