Kinds of Anime
- Kodomo is anime targeted toward children 13 years old or younger. In Japanese, kodomo means child. The plots of kodomo are simple and easy to follow. Kodomos handles situations that are immersed in fantasy. A well-known kodomo anime is Pokemon.
Shonen is created for teenagers ages 13 to 18. The themes are action-based and generally include combat and fighting within the plot. A shonen anime may typically deal with surreal characters such as monsters and demons; however, it may also focus on comedic scenarios and situations grounded in reality. A shonen anime will usually have characters associated with supernatural abilities. The Dragon Ball series is an example of a shonen anime.
Shojo is an anime for young girls. Plots mainly focus on romance, friendships and love. Shojo deals with the appreciation of creating beauty and has a feminine quality to it. - Seinen is an anime aimed at men and includes common adult-themed plots such as violence and sex. Seinen appeals to a more masculine and mature audience.
Josei is aimed directly at women. The style tends to limit itself from abstract and supernatural themes and carries more realistic stories. Common themes include family, relationships and everyday living. - Hentai is anime porn. Hentia anime can range from fantasy to real life and may fuse with other styles of anime. In Yuri anime, lesbian themes are the primary focus, while Yaoi is anime focusing on homosexual themes between men. Yuri and Yaoi anime have a target audience of both male and female.
- Mecha is a form of anime that associates mechanical robots with its stories. In Japan the word "mecha" is used to define anything mechanical. An example of mecha is the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing series that is distributed in the Western world. Mecha anime targets both children and adults as viewers.
