How to Hunt Blacktail Deer

41
    • 1). Bring supplies to endure a long day in the sun. The open seasons on Blacktails feature high temperatures. Always wear a safety vest when moving.

    • 2). Hunt after a rain if possible. Blacktails are more likely to be active during the day when it is cool, as after a rain. Unfortunately, the hot weather during open season often leads to Blacktails remaining dormant during the day.

    • 3). Flush out deer by walking through the brush. If you are hunting in a large group, fanning out and walking through the thickets in which the deer like to hide during the day can startle them and force them into the open.

    • 4). Maintain a "rear guard" if you have a group large enough to walk the brush while also leaving some hunters behind. Often, Blacktails will remain hidden when they sense the danger, wait for the hunters to pass and attempt to escape behind after the danger passes, causing them to run right at the trailing hunters. It is important to remain far enough behind the other hunters to ensure their safety.

    • 5). Get into a concealed position early, before the sun has risen, if you will be hunting from a blind. By getting in the blind early, you reduce the likelihood of being detected by a Blacktail.

    • 6). Rattle antlers to attract Blacktails to your location. The sound of rattling horns is a popular call for attracting many types of deer, and is also effective with some Blacktail deer.
