Delta Air Lines Baggage Information
- You can carry on one bag and one personal item on the flight with you. The bag must fit into the overhead bin and may not exceed 45 inches in combined length, width and height (22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches). You may also place the bag under the seat in front of you. Personal items can include a purse, briefcase, camera or diaper bag. Since laptop computers cannot be checked in, this item counts as your one personal item. Coats, umbrellas, previously approved food and drink, strollers, car seats, wheelchairs or crutches may be carried on in addition to the one personal item.
- Baggage that is checked must weight 50 pounds or less and measure 62 inches or less when combining length, width and height, or extra fees will apply. Passengers can check up to 10 bags if space is available for Delta flights and four bags for Delta Connection carrier travel. Different fees apply depending on your flight destination. As of May 2010, the following baggage fees apply for domestic travel and flights between the United States, Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico: online, $23 for first checked in bag, $32 for second; at the airport, $25 for first bag, $35 for second. International travel rates vary, but usually the first checked bag is free and an additional fee may apply to the second bag. See Delta airline's website for all fees for domestic and international travel (see Resources for a link).
- Notify a Delta representative at the baggage counter of any fragile or awkward items you need to carry on or check, which may require additional fees. If the item does not meet the normal requirements for carry-on or checked baggage, you may purchase an extra ticket as long as the item does not weigh more than 100 pounds, can be secured with a seat belt and does not restrict access by other passengers. Examples of fragile and bulky items include bicycles, antiques, computer monitors, polygraph equipment and stereos.
- Any imported merchandise that is to be used for a short period of time and then returned to the country of origin must include an ATA Carnet document or customs duties and excise taxes will be issued on the item. Commercial samples and items used for displays at trade, agricultural and craft fairs are included in this provision. Professional equipment used for the press, advertising or cinematography is also included.
- Additional fees are not charged for certain medical items such as breathing apparatus which does not weigh more than 150 pounds and needles or syringes used to administer medication. The medication must have a clearly printed label identifying the type of medication, manufacturer's name and pharmaceutical label.
- Musical instruments can be carried on or checked, depending on the size of the instrument. If the item is small enough such as a guitar or violin and there is room in the overhead bin, the instrument may be carried on. For larger instruments, checked items must not exceed 120 inches for combined length, width and height. The combined weight of the instrument and case may not be more than 100 pounds. If a checked instrument does exceed these size and weight restrictions, you have the option to purchase an extra ticket for that item.
- Any item that is considered hazardous by federal law is prohibited from Delta Air Lines' flights. These include fireworks, explosives, aerosols, bleach, drain cleaners, pesticides, camping equipment containing fuel, propane canisters, gun powder and tear gas. Certain restrictions apply to alcohol, dry and wet ice, fuel lighters, lighter refills, matchbooks, lithium batteries and small firearms.
