When Is it Safe to Stain Pressure-Treated Wood?
- Pressure-treated wood has a high moisture content, which prevents some stains and sealers from penetrating the wood. Wait at least two months to allow the lumber to dry before applying the sealer or stain.
- There are products available, such as Wolman Raincoat, which are formulated to be used on unseasoned, new pressure-treated lumber. These products are applied immediately after installation of a deck, arbor or other outdoor structure.
- Pressure-treated lumber turns gray or silver after one to two years of exposure. Waiting until the wood changes color before staining and sealing allows for a wider variety colors to be achieved, even the natural color of the lumber.
