When Is it Safe to Stain Pressure-Treated Wood?

13

    Drying Time

    • Pressure-treated wood has a high moisture content, which prevents some stains and sealers from penetrating the wood. Wait at least two months to allow the lumber to dry before applying the sealer or stain.

    Immediate Use

    • There are products available, such as Wolman Raincoat, which are formulated to be used on unseasoned, new pressure-treated lumber. These products are applied immediately after installation of a deck, arbor or other outdoor structure.

    Color Changes

    • Pressure-treated lumber turns gray or silver after one to two years of exposure. Waiting until the wood changes color before staining and sealing allows for a wider variety colors to be achieved, even the natural color of the lumber.
