To sew the pillow, place the wrong sides, or back sides, of the fabric together. Sew three of the four sides together and half of the remaining side. Turn the pillow right side out and stuff. Once the pillow is stuffed with features, sew the opening closed with a blind stitch.

    Antique European Designs

    • The best fabrics to use to make European-styled antique pillows are tapestry and cotton. Both fabrics were used in several European countries to make pillows for window seats, chairs, coffins and beds. Select fabrics that are pictorial in nature. Mythological and religious scenes are appropriate when making a European- influenced pillow. Toile is a fabric that incorporates these themes into the fabric. Beads, as well as crewel work, can be added to the top of the pillow to make the feather pillow even more elaborate.

    Chinese Pillows

    • Although the Chinese are well-known for their antique pillows made from jade, porcelain and obsidian, the Chinese also elaborately decorated pillows made from silk. Re-creations of these antique pillows are beautiful and look good in almost any room. Choose silk fabrics that are embroidered in gold or silver with patterns like lotus blossoms or other natural elements. Silk colors suited for making Chinese antique pillows are red, purple, green and white.

    Americana-Inspired Pillows

    • Quilted pillows were extremely popular in both western and pioneer cultures. These pillows are still very popular and are relatively easy to make. To create one of these pillows, find a favorite quilting pattern such as basket or log cabin. Once the pattern is decided, buy fat quarters that have small floral motifs, as well as a solid fabric in a coordinating color. The floral designs on the fat quarters are reminiscent of flour sack fabric, and the solid fabric is perfect for the back of the pillow. Cut and sew the quilt top together. Finish the pillow by following basic pillow sewing instructions.
