Exercises to Focus Eyes
- The purpose of the tromboning exercise is to have your eyes follow an object and continue refocusing on the object as you move it. This is a 30-minute exercise.
Hold a small object at arm's length. As you breathe in, pull the object slowly toward your face, keeping your eyes focused on it. Stop when the object touches your nose. As you breath out, keep your eyes focused on the object as you fully extend your arm. - Swinging is a good exercise for people who spend a lot of time in front of the computer and experience eye strain.
Relax your whole body by standing up and stretching your body with your fingertips pointing at the ceiling. Relieve any muscle tension in your face by widening the eyes and opening your mouth, then tightly squeeze shut your eyelids. Open them again and focus on an object in the distance (something outside a window works well). Start moving your body from side to side slowly while keeping your eyes focused. Blink naturally. Relax and move back and forth 100 times while focusing on the object. - Color day and palming are two other exercises for relaxing your eyes and strengthening the connection between your optic nerve and brain.
For color day, choose a color, then throughout your day focus on seeking out that color in objects and the world around you. When you find the color, focus on the color and not the object itself. In other words, try to let the eye experience the color apart from the form it is taking.
Palming requires you to find a quiet seat and rest your elbows on a table. The palms of your hands should easily reach your eyes without having to slouch or sit awkwardly. Cup your palms and cover both of your eyes with them. Sit in the darkness, breathing slowly and relaxing, and taking in the deep blackness. Practicing a few times a day, 10 minutes each episode, can be beneficial for reducing eye strain.
