How to Choose a Name for a Clothing Business
- 1). Think about what you want your name to say about the type of business you have. For instance, a business offering a clothing-related service may benefit most from having a name that somewhat describes the service itself (i.e. "Joe's Wash 'N' Ready" for a cleaning business) because people in need of that service will have no doubt what you do and may utilize your business after merely seeing your name. Likewise, a descriptive name for a specialty retailer (such as "Men's Big And Tall") will attract people with a particular need for your niche.
- 2). Study the names of successful clothing businesses, particularly those in an area similar to yours. Look for trends (such as naming the business after the founder's first name), as these can indicate traditions that customers are used to seeing and will associate with quality clothing business experiences.
- 3). Keep it short. A name of one to four words is not only easier to remember and repeat (helping your word-of-mouth promotion), it makes things like signs and stationary cheaper and easier to create.
- 4). Think of words to include in your title that people will associate with a good clothing product and fair prices. Some words (or synonyms thereof) might include: chic, hot, sexy, comfy, sturdy, cute, quick (in the case of services), warm, less (relating to price, as in "Payless"), latest, newest, couture, cool, cozy, cutting edge, fashion and runway.
- 5). Try any new names on for size. Talk about your business under a new name for a few days and see how you like it. Listen to how it sounds and how well it catches on among family and friends. See if you can imagine people using this name in their casual conversations about clothing.
