How to Obtain a Certified Marriage License in New York
- 1). Apply in person with any town or city clerk in the state of New York. Both the man and the woman intent on marrying must apply in person to sign the license. No one else may perform this task for them; no power of attorney applies in this case.
- 2). Provide proof of identity and age. Each party wishing to marry must submit to the clerk one of the following age related documents: birth certificate, naturalization record, baptismal record or census record, and one of the following documents proving identity: driver's license, immigration record, passport or employment picture ID.
- 3). Complete and sign the application in the presence of the issuing clerk. Additional information may be requested including address, telephone and social security number.
- 4). Pay the clerk the required license fee. You will be issued the certified marriage license at this point. There is a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before the wedding ceremony can be performed.
- 5). Include additional documentation if you have had a previous marriage. You will be required to provide proof of the termination of your previous marriage such as a divorce decree, annulment document or death certificate.
