The Main Reasons Why I Hesitate About The Cloud.
Cloud computing is the main buzz word in IT right now. Wither its IT staff talking about how they are migrating users to the cloud or users asking if we could just put application X on the cloud its Dataforge Computer Consulting not going away. Sure this will blend into mobile computing, but Ill try and safe that for another argument.
The first thing that always comes to mind is response time and flexibility. When you are dealing with your main infrastructure like email / Exchange you dont want to be at the mercy of someone else. You dont want to have to wait for a call back, have support ticket after support ticket to get things done. Sure RackSpace and some other of the big guys are pretty good at helping their user base and not limiting functions. If Im running exchange for users I want the limits of its capabilities to be exchange. Not the service provider I chose.
Another thing Ive noticed is that everyone seems to think that large scale networks dont have problems. Ive herd of office 365 outages and have heard about Microsoft mail servers getting black listed by say spamcop and Barracudas RBLs. This doesnt make me feel good. If for some reason one of my sites gets black listed. Dataforge Computer Consulting I resolve the issue and clean up my black lists. It doesnt happen very often but hey it happens. Im just thinking if youre on a shared system with lots of other users that arent part of your domain and or company that seems like an issue for me.
I also see that people dont think about all their data it seems. I dont see how the cloud will handle data from say accounting systems and or legacy services like JDE, term, citrix, etc. Sure you could outsource those services individually but Im not really a fan of that. It just seems like the basic idea of the cloud is email, word, excel and powerpoint.

The best way I feel about the cloud is my users and my data are just eggs in my basket. The eggs being my responsibility and the basket being how I manage them. I dont want to take my eggs and put them in someone elses basket. This gives me less control and more stress about allowing someone else do the things that I like to do myself. Remember when RIM went down for like 3 days? Remember how all the iPhone users will gloating about their services working? And at that time RIM was to big to fail.
The last thing I want to touch on is security. Some very large networks were compromised and a lot of bad things happened. Heres some quick ones from off the top of my head.
