How to Cut Countertops for a Sink
- 1). Make sure your countertop is sitting on the base cabinet and in the proper position.
- 2). Place the sink upside down on the top surface of the countertop where it will be installed. Be careful not to position the sink too far forward, or the sink bowl will interfere with the front of the sink cabinet. Do not position the sink too far backward, as the sink's flange will interfere with the countertop black splash.
- 3). Make sure the sink is sitting square on the countertop. Trace around the outside edge of the countertop with a pencil.
- 4). Measure 3/8 inch inside the trace line, and make a new inner line using a straightedge and the bottom of a tin can with a 1½-inch radius.
- 5). Drill a pilot hole with an electric drill and a ½-inch drill bit inside the inner line. Do not drill or cut outside the inner line, as the sink's flange may not cover it once installed.
- 6). Prepare a spiral saw by applying painter's tape to the bottom of the saw's base to avoid scratching the countertop.
- 7). Insert the spiral saw into the pilot hole. Turn on the saw and begin cutting on the inner line. Do not let the saw drift outside the inner line.
- 8). Remove the cut-out piece of countertop carefully.
- 9). Lift the sink into the mounting hole.
- 10
Make minor adjustments to the hole with a file or rasp if the sink will not fit initially.
