Why Do Male Deer Have Antlers?

41

    Function

    • Male deer will grow antlers for the main purpose of battling with other males. They will lock antlers and test their strength during the mating season.

    Significance

    • In some cases, a male will grow antlers so large that the other males will simply not bother challenging him. This allows that male to have the right to breed with the female deer in the group and pass his genes to the next generation.

    Size

    • Males that manage to grow a huge set of antlers will develop strong neck muscles simply from carrying the antlers upright. This is also an advantage when engaging others in combat.

    Defense

    • Deer also use their antlers to defend themselves against predators. Some species have antlers with sharp tines which can deter an attack by animals such as wolves and cougars.

    Food

    • In the winter, when snow becomes deep, deer will use their antlers to clear the ground. This helps them find grasses and other foods to sustain themselves.
