What You Should Know Before Buying RC Helicopters

11
You can see them in open fields, in parks, sometimes in your family's home.
They are those guys and gals with the remote control, and a buzzing contraption hovering or flying around them.
These people with their toys, gadgets, and books are enthusiasts of RC helicopters.
If you are looking to get into this hobby, or just looking for a gift for someone who is, then there a few things you may need to know.
Are you a beginner? Chances are, if you are reading this you are.
If that is the case, you may need to realize that just starting out you are liable to crash the poor thing.
This is not a problem, it happens to the best of us.
However, you will need an RCH (RC heli) that is crash resistant.
Meaning, it will not shatter to bits on your first try.
One example of this is the R/C 16 inches Insect Dragonfly Helicopter, which (like all the examples in this article) can be found at authors site.
Something else to consider is the amount of movement, which goes with complexity of controls, you would like.
The most basic controls are 2channel, which control up and down movement as well as rotation (which way it's facing).
You can gain forward momentum by balancing the RCH in the air (no rotation) only, but there is no actual control of this.
X-Type Infrared 2ch Mini RC Helicopter is an example of a 2channeler.
With the 3-channel control, you bring in control of forward momentum.
Rather than having to balance the heli and stop all rotation, you simply press forward to make it go forward.
Of course, it is recommended you do have some balance so that you can keep control of the thing, and prevent a crash.
Even the most durable toy will break if thrown against a wall enough, after all.
Adding a fourth channel to the mix let you control side-to-side movement.
Your facing will stay the same, you will just move left or right in relation to the current orientation.
This is also called 'crabbing' if you needed a visual.
The 6 channel RCH is the most complex of the controls.
With the sixth channel, you will gain control of the main rotor pitch.
To put it in simpler terms, it allows for full three-dimensional movement.
Up, down, forwards, backward, side-to-side, and even diagonal movement is now possible.
There is a fifth channel, but it is often unused.
A good example of a 6ch model is the ESky Belt CP 6 Channel Electric Helicopter.
Another factor to consider is price.
The more control you have, the more the price is going to be.
The same can be said for durability.
Prices for an RCH that is ready to fly (rtf) or almost ready to fly (limited construction need; ARF) range from around 35 dollars to upwards of 300 dollars.
You could always build your own, but it is recommended to wait until you are more familiar with the hobby before you try that.
As you can see, there are several factors to consider before purchasing your first RC helicopter.
They have a wide selection, with much information on each model they carry.
Other than that, be safe, and try not to crash your first time.
