Canadian Individual Tax Return Filing Requirements

31
    • There are a number of requirements for filing individual income tax returns in Canada. The purpose of these filing requirements is to balance benefits overpayment and to let you claim credits and other entitlements. To file your income taxes, you need to obtain the appropriate forms which vary by province. In addition, your residency status also impacts the tax package you will use and the credits and deductions you can claim.

    Income Tax Package

    • Use the right income tax package to file your income tax. Tax packages are normally sent to you through the mail and are unique to every province. In the event that you need a tax package, you can download it from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website. If you are a non-resident or deemed resident, you will need a different tax package, which you can also download from the Canada Revenue Agency website. In addition, you can obtain a package in person from any postal or Service Canada office. Your tax package includes a guide, forms, and the schedules you need to file your income tax. Tax packages are available beginning on February 1.

    Income Tax Return Preparation

    • Collect all the information slips that pertain to your tax situation, social insurance number, self employment information, and receipts to justify deductions and credits. Your tax return will include all your income and other benefits you received during the year as well as provincial credits. If you file electronically, ensure that you keep all tax forms and information slips for your personal records.

    Filing your Return

    • The Canada Revenue Agency offers a variety of filing methods for your convenience. The fastest way to file is to use an E-file service provider who can also complete and file your return for a fee. If you elect to use the NETFILE system, you can prepare your own return with CRA approved tax preparation software and file for free if you qualify. In addition, the TELEFILE system allows you to file free through the phone and is faster than filing by mail. Both NETFILE and TELEFILE are available starting on February 15.

    Filing Deadlines

    • The CRA has established April 30 as the filing deadline for all income tax returns. For self-employed individuals, the income tax filing deadline is June 15. However, if you are self-employed, you must still pay income tax by April 30 to avoid late penalties.
