How to Cancel Unused Credit Cards
- 1). Contact the credit card issuer to close your line of credit. In most cases, you can do this over phone. Be sure to express your intention to the representative on the other end. In some cases, you may simply need to press a button to close your card.
- 2). Listen intently to the representative, who will advise you on the steps you need to take to officially close your account. As a word of caution, you will probably be directed to a representative, who will try to convince you to retain your card.
- 3). Ask the representative to specifically report to the credit bureaus that the card was "closed at customer's request."
- 4). Note the time and the day of the call and the name of the representative you spoke to. Preserve this information until you receive a written confirmation from your issuer about the closure of your credit card in case something goes wrong with your card or account.
