Wild Flower Plants
- Royal catchfly, or Sinene regia, thrives in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 4 through 9. It can be found in prairies and dry woods that have full sun and moist, well-drained soil. The red, star-shaped flowers appear in June through August. The mature size of this plant is 2 to 4 feet in height. It is native in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio, and is listed as endangered in Illinois and Indiana.
- Wild petunia, or Ruellia humilis, thrives in USDA zones 4 through 8. It can be found on prairies and in open woods. This plant self-sows and likes moist, well-drained soils in partial sun to shade. It grows to a mature size of 8 to 12 inches in height and blooms in June through September. The lavender flowers only last one day. It can be found in the wild in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Ohio. It is threatened in Michigan and endangered in Wisconsin.
- The butterfly weed, or Asclepias tuberosa, can be found growing wild in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. Butterfly weed is found in bright, sunlit fields and in soils that range from dry and infertile to moist and well-drained. It thrives in USDA zones 4 through 9. This plant's mature size is 1 to 2 feet in height. The blooms range from orange to red and appear on the plant in June through September. Once the plant has bloomed, narrow seedpods form that contain seeds with attached white fluff.
- Tidy-tips, or Layia platyglossa, is an annual that is native to California but can also be found as far east as Texas. It likes a well-drained soil that receives full sun. The blooms of this plant are displayed on elongated stems that showcase a flower that is yellow with white tips. The blooming period occurs from March to May. The mature size of this plant is 12 to 14 inches.
- Toadflax or spurred snapdragon is also called Linaria maroccana. This plant is native to Morocco but has naturalized throughout the United States. The flowers are delicate and come in a wide range of colors. These include yellow, red, pink, white and purple. The blooms can be found on short spikes from March through June in sunny to partial-shade locations.
- The New England aster, or Aster novae-angliae, is a hardy perennial that is native to the Northeastern United States. Flowers are produced from August through October and consist of large petals that are rosy-lilac to deep purple in color. The center of each flower is yellow and the leaves wrap themselves around the hairy stems. This plant is found in locations that receive full sun.
