Dog Digging - Is it a Problem?

50
The relationship between you and your dog stays wonderful if your dog keeps behaving as you want him to.
But the moment your dog starts doing the things that you do not like, the relationship becomes worse.
The problem is that we tend to forget the natural instincts of our dogs and once we enter that sort of frame of mind, we can never train them to do the acceptable things.
One of such problems which affect the relationship between you and your dog is digging.
Dogs do dig.
In fact this is something natural.
You will have to let them dig as digging pleases them a lot.
But, what about excessive digging? What should you do when your dog starts doing it more than acceptable number? You will have to train your dog.
If you are leaving your dog in his favorite muddy area for having fun, there is nothing wrong with digging.
But what should you do if your dog starts digging in your lawn? There are two methods to stop digging.
Let's have a look at them.
o You can allow your dog to dig for fun.
This means that you will have to specify time each day and place him where he can dig.
And if your dog wants to dig any other time than you determine, you can tell him that it is not acceptable at all.
But this is a little dangerous.
One major problem is that sometimes you will not have time to take out your dog for his favorite activity and that will result in abnormal or unacceptable behavior.
He may start excessive barking or may start digging right in the center of your lawn.
o Another method is to communicate with the dog and tell him straight away that his digging behavior is not acceptable.
This way, you will be asking him to stop digging and you will not be providing him any opportunity to dig.
This method would be useless if you don't provide your dog some healthy and acceptable alternatives.
Here are some of the things you can do: - Do not let your dog to rest whole day.
Force him for physical activities.
Make him run and play around.
- When you are not around and no one else can supervise your dog, confine him.
Do not let him do anything without you.
- You can try to make your dog afraid of digging in a nice way.
You can do simple things.
For instance, locate the area where he loves to dig.
Bring balloons and place them in that area.
Balloons will blast when your dog digs.
- Fill the holes that he dug.
This is another well known preventive method.
