How to Plant Flowers Tall in the Back & Short In the Front
- 1). Create a diagram of the flowerbed with the graph paper and pencil, carefully measuring the bed size. Add areas where flowers will be placed after researching each plant's individual mature height and width. Leave appropriate spacing between plants and cluster varieties.
- 2). Prepare the flower garden bed by digging the soil to a depth of 6 inches and mixing in peat moss and fertilizer.
- 3). Begin planting the tallest plants at the back of the flower bed, which could be bordered by a wall or a fence. Tall plants could include the canna plant, ferns, lily, delphinium, cone flower, iris, yarrow, cleome, cosmos, sunflower and peony.
- 4). Add medium height flowering plants which could include shasta daisy, phlox, snapdragon, rudbeckia, marigolds, zinnia and foxglove.
- 5). Plant the shortest flowers, which could include coreopsis, dianthus, lavender, zinnia, impatiens, lily of the valley, primrose, astilbe, moss rose and alyssum.
