How to Deal With a Phone Call Credit Service

10
    • 1). Check the caller ID on your phone and write down the phone number the company is calling from. In some cases the companies that make unsolicited calls also block their phone numbers, but if you can get a phone number it gives you a starting point for researching the firm and its reputation.

    • 2). Ask the caller for the name of the company and a phone number where it can be reached. A legitimate credit service should be glad to provide you with a call-back number, while a less-than-honest firm will be reluctant to give out such information.

    • 3). Refuse any requests for personal information, including credit card numbers, your Social Security number and bank account information. Never give out this information to someone who makes an unsolicited phone call to you.

    • 4). Hang up if you are at all suspicious of the company and its claims. Gather as much information as you can and then end the call.

    • 5). Contact the attorney general's office in your state and report the phone call. The attorney general's office can determine whether the company is in violation of the Do Not Call Registry laws and other applicable laws. The office can also provide you with any complaint information about the company or reassure you that the services it offers are legitimate.
