      Turkey by the roadside

Dress in camouflage clothing and drive your car out to a rural wooded area with your trained dog. Scan the sides of the road and fields for flocks of turkeys. If you do not see any turkeys right away, be very quiet and listen because turkeys can be quite noisy.

    • 2). Use your turkey call if you do not see any turkeys. Calling works best when the wind is not blowing.

    • 3). Keep your dog quiet and hidden with you while you call using your turkey call.

    • 4). Wait to give the dog the command to fetch until the turkeys are as close as possible.

    • 5). Send the dog to fetch your turkey when the birds are close. Take some action photos or video if you have time. If the dog splits the flock, but does not fetch a turkey, then proceed to the next step.

    • 6). Follow one of the groups of turkeys as they split apart. Wait until the birds are nearly out of sight to begin. Move quietly, but quickly, because they probably will not go far. Use your turkey call utilizing yelps like a lost turkey, assembly yelps, and kee-kee runs. The birds may come looking for you thinking you are a lost turkey.

    • 7). Stay perfectly still after calling and try to stay hidden. The turkeys will try to reassemble as they come looking for the lost turkey, which is you. Allow them to come as close as possible again, then send your dog to fetch a turkey.

    • 8). Sneak as close to the tree as possible and wait for daybreak. As the birds will come out of the tree for the day, send your dog to fetch one. You may repeat these steps until you have your turkey.
