About HD Satellite Receivers
- HDTV delivers a picture that is superior to standard definition (SD) by increasing the image resolution and the rate of frames-per-second for video. It also expands the aspect ratio to a wider 16:9 and contains digital stereo audio which can include surround-sound with some programming.
- HD satellite receivers can either be provided by subscription satellite services or purchased to be connected to a satellite dish to pick up free-to-air (FTA) HD channels.
- With subscription satellite providers, an HD receiver allows viewers with HDTVs to take advantage of the improved video and audio offered on HD channels.
- The receiver offers both HDMI and component video outputs for HD video and audio, as well as coaxial cable and composite video/audio outputs. Most will also have audio outputs for digital surround-sound for home theater systems.
- Many satellite customers now have a digital video recorder (DVR) feature with their HD receiver, which can record two (or more) channels at the same time for later playback. While it can record both HD and SD programming, HD takes more memory, meaning that fewer hours can be stored in HD.
