Teeth Whitening Gel - What is It, and How Does it Work?
Teeth whitening gel is a gel consisting of carbamide peroxide and various other whitening agents, and is used by both dentists and in high-end home teeth whitening kits to whiten and get rid of stains and blemishes on teeth.
Teeth whitening gel can be bought easily online, or through your dentist.
It is applied by either having the dentist brush or paint it onto the teeth, or in a special dental tray included in many home whitening kits.
These trays can be either fixed shape, or boil-and-bite, which molds the tray to the individual shape of the teeth and is more comfortable for prolonged use.
You can also order custom fitted trays from your dentist, although this is much more expensive.
The gel is applied to the tray, which is then fitted over the teeth, which must then be worn for a period of time dependent on the treatment used and the strength of the gel being used.
The gel can be bought in varying strengths, usually 7 percent, 11 percent, 22 percent or 32 percent.
Additionally some treatments use a light activated gel, which uses a laser light to make the gel 'active'.
This drastically cuts down on the time required, and up until recently was exclusively used by dentists, although some home laser kits are now available.
Teeth whitening gel is generally considered to be very safe, and in fact many studies have shown it has very little negative effect, besides occasionally causing additional tooth sensitivity.
This sensitivity can be cured with a follow up treatment of using high fluoride toothpaste for a short period after the procedure.
