  A chemist is a scientist who analyzes the makeup of chemical compounds. This research may be used to develop new products or to identify new substances. A chemist may find employment in a variety of settings, such as pharmaceutical companies, consumer product manufacturers and academic institutions. Employment within this field requires at least a four-year degree. Some employers, however, will only consider those who possess a doctorate degree. As of May 2008, says a report published by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics chemists in this country earned an average salary of $66,230 per year.
  
  

Research

• Working in a laboratory environment, the primary duty of a chemist is to perform research. Using equipment such as microscopes and slides, he examines matter, identifying its composition, structure and the properties that make it up. Utilizing his in-depth knowledge of chemistry, he will often perform experiments, combining various elements and monitoring the results of these activities. The primary goal of this research is to develop new products and/or processes and to improve those that currently exist.
  
  

Reporting

• Once he has completed his research, the chemist composes a detailed record of the results in a format prescribed by his employer. Such reports may be paper or digital. In the case of a major scientific breakthrough, she may do more than simply report the finding to her employer. Quite often, she will publish this new information in a scientific journal. In some instances, a chemist will write a detailed book on her discovery. This is often followed by lectures on the subject given to the academic and scientific communities, as well as to the public at large.
  
  

Academic Responsibilities

• When a chemist is employed within an academic environment, he is required to perform a list of tasks in support of the science that he researches and teaches. For starters, he must develop a syllabus, highlighting each area of study his course will cover. He then must create individual lesson plans, laying out the specifics of each day of instruction. Quizzes, tests and experiments must also be designed as supplements to, and benchmarks of, the student's knowledge. Additionally, he must also perform many administrative tasks such as taking class attendance and grading papers.
