How to Make Portrait Quilts

26
    • 1). Lay the central portrait panel on your work surface. Measure the length of the panel and add 12 inches. Cut two pieces of fabric measuring 6 inches wide by the final length and lay one on either side of the portrait panel with 6 inches above the panel and 6 inches below.

    • 2). Measure the width of the central panel and cut two pieces of the 6-inch wide fabric to this measurement. Lay it beneath the central panel.

    • 3). Repeat the above measurements, including the lengths and widths of the side panels to make another four fabric pieces to surround the central panel and the side panels. Cut out the shapes and lay them around the quilt. Repeat until the quilt reaches the size you would like.

    • 4). Sew each adjoining section of the quilt together with a whipstitch.

    • 5). Measure the length and width of the quilt and cut a piece of backing fabric according to these measurements. If you would like to add an inner layer of cotton batting, cut a piece to the same size as the quilt.

    • 6). Lay the fabrics together, with the portrait quilt face down on the bottom and the backing fabric face up on top. Sew the layers together with a running stitch.

    • 7). Cut four pieces of binding for the quilt. Cut two for the quilt's length and two for the quilt's width. Sandwich the quilt edges in between the tape's folds. Sew a running stitch to attach the tape.
