The Growing Drug Problem
Drugs and addiction are a major problem in South Africa.
Drugs are infecting the schools.
Drug dealers are increasing and are no longer hidden away.
The quality of the drugs is also becoming dangerous as new and cheaper forms of manufacturing are being discovered.
Recent studies have shown that in the Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal areas drug related crimes have increased by 200% in the last year alone.
In South Africa the increase in drugs and drug related crime is growing at a massive rate.
Rehabs, Churches and other groups are fighting a losing battle.
Its only so common to see newspapers printing articles of drugs.
What was once a subject that was hush hush is now a common problem.
Rehabs in all provinces are shocked as the average age of residents is now 15 years old.
The schools are also having to try and deter and prevent its learners from this problem.
Random drug testing and also new changes to the school syllabus are some of the ways that they are proactively tackling the epidemic.
The reality is that this effort is of course a step in the right direction but even still every high school has a drug problem.
In fact some of the schools that I have spoken to, actually have "runners" dealing drugs.
A young boy or girl recruited by a dealer to push drugs and earn money.
From a dealers perspective, there is nothing better than getting as school kid "hooked".
Its an investment into a life long customer and a drug addict who will eventually do anything to bring you more money.
Not so long ago, drug dealers where hidden away and far from normal society.
But these days things have changed.
In fact drug dealers and drug deals are happening in and around shopping centres, gyms and street corners in upmarket suburbs.
Are the police to blame? what is being done? We are also starting to see that drugs are now being synthetically made in labs that dont actually know what to do.
And so drugs like Tik and Cat are often produced wrong and become lethal and people are dying.
Its crazy that we often think of drug dealers as rich and wealthy businessman.
The truth is that drug dealers are poor people that are using a criminal activity for one reason and this is to make money.
They don't care about the quality.
Its so dangerous.
As a community and a country we need to come together to fight this war.
