How Reading Fantasy Novels Can Improve Your ASVAB Score

31
If you are a potential military recruit with dreams of joining the United States Armed Services, then you will have to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVAB.
In this article, I will show you how reading fantasy novels is not a bad thing and can actually help improve your ASVAB score.
Many recruits, when they realize that they have to take the Armed Services Exam or ASVAB, go into panic mode and think they have to drop everything going on in their life and just study, study, study.
If you are a bookworm or avid reader, you may think that it is time to put down your books so that you can focus your attention instead on studying for the ASVAB.
However, this is not the case.
Reading, regardless of the genre that you are reading, can actually help improve your score in a number of ways.
While the ASVAB is designed to test you on the many subjects that you have learned throughout high school, the exam is given to you in a reading type format, meaning you will have to read the questions and read the sections.
Therefore the better you are reading and the better you are at understanding information, the more likely you are to score well on the exam.
There are many students who are very smart and did quite well in high school.
However, because they are not strong with reading, find themselves struggling slightly on the exam given that they do not understand the information as it is presented to them.
So if you love to read, continue reading but approach it with a different focus.
In the past, as you were reading, perhaps you came across a word that you didn't understand and simply glanced over it because the paragraph or story overall still makes sense despite that single word.
Now though, given that you have the ASVAB on your mind, keep a dictionary nearby.
If you come across a word you don't understand, look it up.
Get the definition.
Get the meaning.
Then go back and ensure that you understand the word in the context of the sentence.
Doing this as you continue reading will help you improve your vocabulary and help you improve your understanding of the written material as it is presented to you in any format.
After you read a paragraph or a chapter or even the entire novel, take some time to reflect on what you read.
What was the purpose of the story? What is the author trying to say? Was there any hidden meaning? By testing yourself on this manner, you will force your mind to automatically process as you read and this too will help you on your ASVAB.
