How to Crochet With Cotton Thread
- 1). Choose your materials. With crochet cotton thread, the recommended hooks are tiny. Steel crochet hooks are made in small diameters and they are useful in making intricate crocheted lace. However, you can also use a small, standard crochet hook, such as a size US F or G, to make lacy items with cotton crochet thread. If you use a larger hook, your stitches will be loose, which may also be acceptable, depending on the project you choose.
- 2). Find a suitable project. For something traditional, crochet a doily, using white crochet cotton thread. For a new spin, make your doily in a bright color or don't make a doily at all. Use cotton thread to crochet small motifs to sew onto clothing items and accessories or crochet some small jewelry items, using this versatile material. You could even use it to crochet a lightweight, warm-weather scarf in a striped pattern like the ones that are popular in retail stores during summer months.
- 3). Crochet your project using tight stitches. The reason for this is that you will get the most definition out of your stitches if you keep your tension tight. Crochet cotton thread tends to be a little slippery, so loose stitches may cause it to slide around while you work with it, and it could warp your pattern.
- 4). Finish your projects. Cotton does not usually block well, but you can steam it with an iron and then pin your finished project in the shape you want it to have when finished. For a small motif, especially for jewelry projects, dip your finished creation in liquid starch or spray it with aerosol starch spray and let it dry. Pin it in place, if needed. When the piece is dry, it will be stiff and hold its own shape well.
