Becoming a Lawyer in Virginia
- 1). Complete your undergraduate degree with a major in whatever subject you choose. There are no special requirements that you must fulfill during your undergraduate education in order to be accepted to law school other than receipt of a Bachelor's degree.
- 2). Study law at an American Bar Association accredited law school for three years and graduate with a Juris Doctorate degree.
- 3). Apply to the Virginia Board of Law Examiners to sit for the bar examination and pay the required fees. Complete the character and fitness investigation as part of the application process. This investigation will look into whether you have any criminal history and whether you are of good moral character in general.
- 4). Pass the Virginia Bar examination as well as the Multi-state Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). Once all requirements are met, attend a swearing-in ceremony and take the oath of attorney.
